Traffic Restrictions on NH-10 Due to Safety Concerns Following Bench Collapse

KalimNews, Kalimpong, October 9, 2025 : The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has announced a temporary restriction on the movement of heavy vehicles on National Highway 10, following safety concerns arising from the collapse of a bench at the 29th Mile section of the highway.

The restriction will come into effect from midnight on October 11, 2025, and will remain in place until 6:00 PM on October 14, 2025, with the possibility of extension depending on the situation. During this period, all heavy vehicles, including trucks and commercial transport, will be prohibited from using this stretch of the highway.

The NHIDCL stated that the decision has been made to ensure the safety of both commuters and the integrity of the road, given the potential risks posed by the damaged infrastructure. Authorities have assured that they are working to address the issue promptly and will provide updates as necessary. However, no further information on the specific repairs required has been shared yet.

Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during the restricted period. Local authorities are coordinating with traffic police and other relevant agencies to ensure smooth enforcement of the restrictions and to manage any potential traffic disruptions in the affected area.

This move follows a series of safety assessments conducted on the highway, which revealed that the collapse of the bench at 29th Mile could lead to further structural issues if heavy vehicles continue to pass through the section.

As of now, light vehicles will continue to operate on NH-10 without restrictions, but authorities have urged all drivers to exercise caution in the area. Further announcements are expected if there are any changes to the timeline or additional safety measures.
