Singapore Police to Provide Crucial Evidence in Zubeen Garg Case in 10 Days: SIT Chief
CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, addressing a press conference, stated that the Assam Police had formally requested their counterparts in Singapore to provide all relevant information to expedite the ongoing investigation.
Gupta and Titabor Co-District SP Tarun Goel, who had traveled to Singapore four days ago to investigate the unnatural death of the singer, returned to Guwahati on Thursday. Gupta is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT), while Goel is part of the nine-member team formed to probe the case.
“We met the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore and discussed all the legal assistance required. We also had a fruitful discussion with a five-member high-level delegation from the SPF,” Gupta told reporters.
The two police forces discussed the investigation being carried out in both countries and exchanged information on the case.
“We have requested the statement of the yacht pilot and a member of the Assam Association Singapore. Since they are citizens of Singapore, this will need to be done through a legal process. They have assured us that we will receive these statements in the next 10 days,” Gupta added.
The Assam Police team also requested CCTV footage from the hotel and other locations visited by Garg. The SPF has promised to provide this footage within the same time frame.
“We emphasized the need for their assistance to complete the investigation on time. While SPF aims to conclude their probe within 90 days, we, too, will need to submit our chargesheet within three months. They have assured us of full cooperation,” Gupta said.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police is investigating Garg’s death case, following the filing of more than 60 FIRs across the state.
Gupta further shared: “We were able to visit the locations where Zubeen Garg stayed in Singapore, including the yacht, which was rented by the Assam Association Singapore. While international cooperation typically takes time, we are receiving quick assistance in this case.”
He added that the report of the first autopsy, conducted immediately after Garg’s death, had been handed over to the Assam Police team through the Indian High Commission.
On the ongoing investigation in Guwahati, Gupta said: “It is progressing in the right direction. While I cannot share specific details, we have recorded statements from more than 70 people so far.” Garg’s wife, Garima, and sister, Palme Borthakur, visited the CID headquarters earlier in the day to record their statements, he confirmed.
“I urge anyone who has any relevant information or chats with Zubeen Garg prior to his death to come forward and share those details with us,” Gupta added.
The popular singer, who had traveled to Singapore to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival, died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while swimming in the sea.
The Indian government had invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore to seek cooperation in the investigation.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is also conducting an independent investigation into Garg’s alleged drowning. In a statement on October 17, the SPF indicated that preliminary investigations had not revealed any foul play in Garg’s death. They added that the investigation could take up to another three months, after which the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner for further action.
The Assam Police has interrogated 10 Assamese expatriates from Singapore out of 11, who were issued summons in connection with the case. The remaining individual is a citizen of Singapore. A yacht, which was booked by office-bearers of the Assam Association Singapore, was involved, and these 11 individuals were present when Garg allegedly drowned near an island in the sea.
Earlier, North East India Festival chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and his two band members—Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta—were apprehended. Subsequently, Garg’s cousin and Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg was arrested in connection with the singer’s death.
Zubeen Garg’s PSOs, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were also arrested after police found large financial transactions, amounting to over Rs 1.1 crore, from their accounts.
All seven arrested individuals are currently in judicial custody, facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.
