Region-wise interviews for IX-X, XI-XII teacher recruitment: Sources

MP, 24 Oct 2025, Kolkata: The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) is set to conduct region-wise interviews for the recruitment of assistant teachers for Classes IX-X and XI-XII, as confirmed by sources within the Commission. This decision comes as the WBSSC prepares to announce the results of the written examinations for both levels, which were held on September 7 and 14. The results are expected to be released by the first or second week of November.

The interviews are planned to be conducted by the WBSSC's five regional offices: Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and South-Eastern. This regional approach has been adopted to expedite the recruitment process and ensure its completion by December 31, in line with a Supreme Court directive. The recruitment drive aims to fill a total of 35,726 assistant teacher vacancies: 23,212 for Classes IX-X and 12,514 for Classes XI-XII.

Candidates for the interviews will be shortlisted based on a combined merit score, which will take into account their written exam results and academic records. A 1.6:1 ratio will be followed for the selection process, meaning that for every 100 vacancies, around 160 candidates will be called for the interview. Officials estimate that between 50,000 and 60,000 candidates will be part of the interview list.

A senior WBSSC official explained that conducting interviews regionally was necessary to meet the Supreme Court's deadline. "Conducting interviews centrally would take at least five times longer," the official noted. By holding interviews regionally, the process can be completed more efficiently.

However, some candidates have raised concerns about the potential for inconsistencies in the interview process across different regions. One candidate suggested that while they understood the need for region-wise interviews due to time constraints, the WBSSC must ensure uniformity in the marking system and assessment criteria across all regions to maintain fairness.

The region-wise approach aims to streamline the process while addressing concerns of fairness and transparency in the recruitment procedure.
