Nepal Govt Committed to Change and Reforms the Younger Generation Wants: Karki
PTI, KATHMANDU, OCT 10, 2025 : Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday acknowledged that past governments did not listen to the voices and concerns of Generation Z, and that this should be accepted as their "weakness." In a video message marking the first month of the Gen Z movement, which led to the ouster of K.P. Sharma Oli as Prime Minister, Karki assured that her government is committed to the change the younger generation desires.
“We all should accept the revolution brought about by the younger generation,” said Karki, the 73-year-old former Chief Justice of Nepal. “On one hand, there is frustration among our youths, while on the other, they have tremendous love for the nation,” she added. “We all should politely accept our weaknesses and mistakes,” Karki emphasized.
The interim Prime Minister also called on all sides to observe patience and avoid violence, stressing the need for political reform. "Many youths have sacrificed their lives in the Gen Z movement, and hundreds have been injured. I want to remember all those who sacrificed their lives and express my deep sorrow over this tragic incident, extending condolences to the bereaved family members,” Karki stated.
The Gen Z movement, which led to significant protests against the government, saw thousands of youths staging anti-government protests in Kathmandu on September 8 and 9. The protests, which were sparked by allegations of corruption and a ban on social media, tragically resulted in 76 deaths.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s deposed Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has demanded the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, stressing the need for national unity and political stability. Speaking at an event organized by the CPN-UML’s Bhaktapur District Committee in Gundu on Wednesday, Oli expressed confidence that the Nepali Congress would support the move.
Oli resigned in early September following violent protests led by the Gen Z group, which opposed his government’s policies. Karki became the interim Prime Minister on September 12, after President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the parliament on her recommendation. The next general election in Nepal is scheduled to take place on March 5, 2026.
In a separate development, Nepal Police on Thursday arrested 18 activists from the Gen Z group, including Dr. Nicholous Bhusal, for protesting at Maitighar and demanding the arrest of K.P. Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
