World Tourism Day 2025 Celebrated with Grandeur in Kalimpong

KalimNews, Kalimpong, September 20, 2025 : The World Tourism Day 2025 was celebrated with great enthusiasm and cultural vibrance at the historic Town Hall in Kalimpong. The event, which turned into a grand showcase of Kalimpong’s tourism potential and rich traditions, was jointly organized by the District Administration, Kalimpong, and the Kalimpong District Tourism Welfare Society (KDTWS).
The program was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Balasubramanian T, the Kalimpong District Magistrate, Ruden Sada Lepcha, the local MLA, Shrihari Pandey, the Superintendent of police, Additional District Magistrates, Block Development Officers from various blocks, and Panchayat Samiti Sabhapatis. Their presence highlighted the administration’s strong commitment towards positioning Kalimpong as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the region.

The celebration commenced on a soulful and patriotic note with a Gorkhali Song beautifully performed by the KDTWS Music Team, setting the tone for a day dedicated to tourism, culture, and community spirit. This was followed by brief yet impactful addresses from the District Magistrate and the MLA, who emphasized the economic, cultural, and social importance of tourism in Kalimpong. They also highlighted how sustainable tourism and homestay initiatives are creating opportunities for local communities while preserving the unique heritage of the hills.

During the event, old homestay owners received renewal certificates, while new homestay owners were awarded grant cheques by the administration. This initiative not only recognized the contributions of long-standing service providers but also encouraged new entrepreneurs to actively participate in the growing tourism sector. The occasion also marked the much-awaited release of the book “Kalimpong Calling”, a publication aimed at showcasing the district’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism prospects.

The event further delighted audiences with a colorful blend of traditional dances, vibrant fashion shows, and melodious musical performances that reflected the cultural diversity of Kalimpong. Notably, the Kalimpong Block 1 Panchayat Samiti took the opportunity to felicitate several organizations and individuals who have been instrumental in uplifting tourism. The list of honorees included the Kalimpong District Tourism Welfare Society, Ghumaun Kalebung, Deolo Paragliding, Yelbong Adventure, Kafer Gaon, and Dr. Dawa Gyalpo Sherpa, Field Director of Adventure Tourism, GTA — all recognized for their valuable contributions in adventure sports, cultural promotion, and eco-tourism initiatives.

During the event, the District Administration unveiled several new initiatives, including the Cottage Industries Tour Package, Kholey Dai Fest, Yelbong Festival, and the “Face of the Hills” Beauty Pageant. In addition, certificates were distributed to trained birding guides, along with the issuance of TSP registration certificates to eligible stakeholders. The District Administration further felicitated the Mulkharka Homestay Owners Association, St. Joseph’s Convent, Mr. Peter Lobo, and the team of birding guide trainers for their significant contributions to tourism and community development.

The events were meticulously organized under the supervision of Mr. Pritam Limbu, District Tourism OC, and skillfully managed by Soumyadip Santra of the Tourism Department. Their efforts ensured that the program was not only seamless but also engaging for both the dignitaries and the general audience.

Furthermore, the District Administration and Kalimpong District Tourism Welfare Society honored Samiksha Bagdas and Rahul Prasad for their outstanding contributions in promoting Kalimpong through video content. Their creative work on digital platforms has played a vital role in attracting younger generations of travelers to explore Kalimpong’s hidden gems.

The program was smoothly hosted by Suraj Mani Pradhan and Dr. Norden Michael Lepcha, whose engaging style of compering kept the audience connected throughout the event. Their lively presentation added charm to the proceedings and ensured that the spirit of World Tourism Day was truly felt by all.

With its perfect blend of cultural showcases, community recognition, and forward-looking tourism initiatives, the World Tourism Day 2025 celebration in Kalimpong not only honored the essence of global tourism but also reaffirmed Kalimpong’s place on the map as a destination of immense natural beauty, adventure, and cultural richness.
