The Week, September 02, 2025 : Kannada actress Ranya Rao was on Tuesday slapped with a Rs 102 crore fine by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in connection with a gold smuggling case.
She is the stepdaughter of IPS officer K. Ramachandra Rao who was sent on compulsory leave during the investigation.
Others were charged with hefty fines include hotelier Tarun Kondaraju with Rs 63 crore penalty and jewellers Sahil Sakaria Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain with Rs 56 crore each.
Ranya Rao and the three other accused in the case are currently lodged at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru. They were served with a 250-page notice and a 2,500-page annexure, totalling to around 11,000 pages of documents.
The accused were arrested after Ranya Rao was caught redhanded with 14.8 kg smuggled gold at Kempegowda International Airport on March 3, when she was returning from Dubai. She was sentenced to one-year jail under Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA).
DRI had also recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore along with Rs 2.67 crore in cash from Ranya Rao's residence.
Jain reportedly helped Ranya dispose of 49.6 kg of smuggled gold and illegally transfer Rs 38.4 crore to Dubai via hawala.
