Rainfall Expected in South Bengal and North Bengal from October 2 to October 5, 2025

KalimNews, Kolkata, September 30, 2025 : The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for West Bengal in light of an ongoing low-pressure area and a developing cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal. The trough from the well-marked low-pressure area currently extends from the Gulf of Cambay, across South Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh to the west-central Bay of Bengal at 0.9 km above sea level. This system is expected to influence weather patterns in the region over the next few days.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge in the north Andaman Sea today, with a low-pressure area expected to form over the northern and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by October 1, 2025. As a result of this formation, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over most parts of West Bengal, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts from October 2 through October 5.

The IMD has predicted significant weather events for both South and North Bengal in the coming days, including thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Here is the detailed forecast:

South Bengal:

  • September 30, 2025: Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at several places across South Bengal, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) expected in East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts.

  • October 1, 2025: The rainfall will become more widespread, with light to moderate showers expected across most districts of South Bengal. Thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) will continue in some areas.

  • October 2, 2025: Heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is expected in South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, and Hooghly. Meanwhile, other areas such as Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia, and Birbhum will experience heavy rainfall (7-11 cm). Intense thunderstorms with wind speeds up to 50 km/h are likely to occur in some parts.

  • October 3, 2025: Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is forecast for Murshidabad, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Nadia, Bankura, Purulia, and Hooghly. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-50 km/h) will continue in some parts of the region.

  • October 4, 2025: While moderate rainfall is expected, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is likely in Birbhum and Murshidabad. Thunderstorms and gusty winds will persist across the region.

  • October 5, 2025: Light to moderate rain is expected across South Bengal.

North Bengal:

  • September 30, 2025: Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely across North Bengal, with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) expected in Malda, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri districts.

  • October 1, 2025: A similar pattern of rain and thunderstorms is expected, with gusty winds in most areas of North Bengal.

  • October 2, 2025: Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is likely in Malda, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar. Thunderstorms and lightning will continue across the region.

  • October 3 and 4, 2025: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is expected in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, and North Dinajpur. Other districts, including Malda and South Dinajpur, will experience heavy rainfall (7-11 cm).

  • October 5, 2025: Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is forecast for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Coochbehar.

The IMD has raised the possibility of waterlogging and inundation of low-lying areas, including underpasses, and warned of reduced visibility during heavy rainfall, which could lead to traffic congestion. In addition, landslides are a serious concern for the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, with the potential for damage to kutcha roads, vulnerable houses, and crops.

Authorities have also raised concerns about the potential impact on Puja pandals, with intense spells of rain posing a risk to temporary structures. Residents have been urged to take precautionary measures.

Key Safety Recommendations:

  • For South Bengal: Residents are advised to stay indoors during intense spells of rain and thundershowers, particularly in areas prone to gusty winds. Avoid traveling in waterlogged areas and ensure that temporary structures are reinforced.

  • For North Bengal: The public is advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles. During intense rainfall, people should seek shelter in safe locations and avoid areas prone to landslides and waterlogging. Traffic may be regulated to ensure safety, and special care should be taken to protect Puja pandals from the adverse weather.

The IMD will continue to monitor the evolving weather situation and provide updates as necessary. Local authorities are on alert, and residents are urged to follow all safety guidelines.
