PM Modi Raises Concerns Over Cross-Border Terrorism During Talks with President Xi
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a media briefing, confirmed that PM Modi addressed cross-border terrorism as a "priority" during his talks with Xi. The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions aimed at rebuilding bilateral relations, which had been severely strained due to the over four-year-long border standoff in eastern Ladakh, which concluded in October of the previous year.
"Cross-border terrorism was mentioned by the prime minister as a priority. And, I would add that he did underline the fact that this is something that impacts both India and China," Misri said. He further emphasized the need for mutual understanding and support as both nations continue to fight against this shared threat.
Misri also noted that China had shown understanding and cooperation in addressing the issue of cross-border terrorism within the framework of the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. This is seen as a positive development, with speculation that the SCO’s upcoming declaration could include criticism or condemnation of cross-border terrorism, particularly from Pakistan, which has long been an ally of China.
While Pakistan’s role in supporting terrorism has been a point of contention between India and China, Beijing has, in the past, blocked New Delhi’s efforts to designate several Pakistan-based terrorists at the UN Security Council.
When asked whether PM Modi raised the issue of the May Pahalgam terror attack or the use of Chinese equipment by Pakistan’s military during the India-Pakistan conflict, Misri did not provide a direct answer. However, he affirmed that the prime minister had raised the issue clearly and specifically. "He outlined the fact that this is a scourge that both China and India have been victims of, and India is still combating this menace," Misri stated. "He asked for China's support on this particular issue, and the Chinese have extended their support in various ways."
PM Modi arrived in China on Saturday for a two-day visit, marking his first trip to the country in seven years. His visit coincides with the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, and combating terrorism are expected to take center stage.
