Oli Leaves Nepal Army's Barracks, Moves to Private House
Oli had taken refuge in the army barracks, likely located in the Shivapuri forest area to the north of Kathmandu, after the Gen Z protests turned violent. This move came soon after he resigned from the post on September 9.
Having spent nine days under the protection of the Nepal Army, the Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) has now shifted to a private residence. While the exact location of his new residence has not been publicly disclosed, media reports suggest that Oli has relocated to a private house in the Gundu area of Bhaktapur district, around 15 km east of Kathmandu.
During the second day of the protests on September 9, Gen Z protesters torched Oli's house in Balkot, Bhaktapur. At the time, Oli was at the official residence of the Nepalese Prime Minister when protesters partially set fire to the Prime Minister’s Office. With the help of the Nepal Army, Oli was safely evacuated by helicopter.
Apart from Oli, other former Prime Ministers, including Pushpakamal Dahal (Prachanda), Sher Bahadur Deuba, Jhalanath Khanal, Madhav Kumar Nepal, and several senior political leaders, had also stayed under army protection for a period. However, all these leaders, except for Nepali Congress President Deuba and his spouse Arazu Rana Deuba (former Foreign Minister), have since left army security.
Meanwhile, Sher Bahadur Deuba and Arazu—who were injured during the protests—are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital under army security.
The CPN-UML, led by Oli, is organizing a separate event to mark Constitution Day on September 19 in Chyasal, Lalitpur district. However, it remains uncertain whether Oli will attend the event.
Nepal is observing Ashoj 3 according to the Bikram Era calendar as Constitution Day, which falls on September 19 this year. Nepal promulgated its constitution on September 20, 2015, through the Constituent Assembly.
The Nepal government has planned a grand celebration in the capital for Constitution Day, with a public holiday announced for the occasion. President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the Nepal Army chief, ministers, and other dignitaries are expected to attend the event.
