Nepal Records 82 Deaths in Monsoon-Related Incidents, Fewer Than Last Year

PTI, Kathmandu, Aug 31, 2025 : Nepal has reported 82 deaths due to monsoon-related disasters this year, marking a significant decrease compared to the 227 fatalities recorded in 2024, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The official report, released on Sunday, revealed that the country also experienced fewer monsoon-related incidents, with 22 people still missing and 284 injured in a total of 1,417 such events, including floods, landslides, heavy rainfall, lightning, and windstorms.

Interestingly, Nepal received an average of 22% less rainfall this year, amounting to 900 mm, compared to the country’s average of 1,156 mm, according to the NDRRMA.

The report provided a breakdown of the disasters during the monsoon season, which ran from mid-April (Nepalese New Year) to the end of August. It included 243 flood-related incidents, leading to 27 deaths, 22 people missing, and 10 injuries. There were also 368 landslides during the same period, which resulted in 18 deaths, 28 injuries, and displaced 481 families.

Heavy rainfall accounted for 266 incidents, causing 6 deaths and 12 injuries, and affecting 711 families. Meanwhile, lightning struck 258 times across the country, killing 31 people, injuring 193, and affecting 317 families.

In comparison, the previous year’s monsoon season saw a much higher toll, with 1,587 incidents leading to 227 deaths, 47 people missing, nearly 300 injured, and over 4,500 families affected.

Despite the reduced rainfall and a decrease in incidents, the devastating impact of the monsoon season continued to pose challenges for the affected families. The NDRRMA emphasized the ongoing need for disaster preparedness and support for those living in vulnerable areas.
