Nepal Plunges Into Chaos After PM Oli’s Resignation: Violent Gen-Z-Led Uprising Rocks Capital, Senior Leaders Deuba, Paudel Attacked

KalimNews | Kolkata | September 9, 2025 : In a dramatic escalation of political unrest in Nepal, the nation witnessed violent scenes across its capital and major cities following the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. The resignation, formally accepted by President Ram Chandra Paudel, was accompanied by a directive for the current Council of Ministers to continue functioning in a caretaker capacity until a new prime minister is elected. However, this procedural transition has done little to calm the surging wave of anti-government protests, led primarily by Gen-Z demonstrators.

On Tuesday, the epicenter of the unrest shifted dramatically when former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, along with his wife and Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba, were physically assaulted by protesters in Kathmandu. The attack took place at their residence in Budanilkantha, which was stormed by an enraged mob. Eyewitness footage revealed Deuba bleeding from the face, while Arju Rana Deuba was reportedly manhandled. For a brief period, the couple was held by the crowd before authorities could intervene. The Deuba residence was vandalized extensively, with officials describing the act as unprecedented in its aggression.

In another shocking incident, Nepal’s Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, 65, was assaulted in broad daylight. Videos circulating online show Paudel fleeing through the streets of Kathmandu with a mob in pursuit. One clip captures a young protester jumping and kicking him, causing the minister to crash into a wall. The scenes underscored the growing volatility and the unchecked anger sweeping across Nepal’s youth.

Thick smoke choked the Kathmandu skyline as protesters set fire to vehicles, public infrastructure, and government buildings. Public properties were reduced to ash as barricades blazed across key intersections. The scale and intensity of the destruction prompted an outcry from the nation’s top officials and civic leaders, who appealed for calm and national unity.

Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a respected senior ophthalmologist, urged Gen-Z protesters to exercise restraint, emphasizing that the protection of public property is the foremost responsibility of every citizen. His plea was echoed by Nepal’s top brass — Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Inspector General of Police Chandra Kuber Khapung, Chief of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, Armed Police Force Chief Raju Aryal, and Home Secretary Gokarnamani Duwadi. In a joint public appeal, they acknowledged the Prime Minister’s resignation and urged demonstrators to cease all acts of violence and avoid further loss of life and property.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in these tragic events and express heartfelt sympathy to the injured," the appeal read. "With the resignation now in effect, we strongly urge all citizens to act with restraint and support a peaceful path forward through dialogue."

Despite these appeals, violence continued unabated. Protesters set fire to the President's Office at Sheetal Niwas and damaged vehicles and buildings inside the Supreme Court premises, as confirmed by court spokesperson Nirajan Pandey. Similarly, furious demonstrators ransacked the office of Kantipur Television and Radio Kantipur in Tinkune. The mob forced staff to evacuate before setting fire to the media house and taking over the premises.

In a striking development at Nakkhu Prison, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane, who had been detained in connection with a cooperative savings fraud case, was brought out to address the crowd. A video shared by RSP central member Krantishikha Dhital shows Lamichhane speaking with demonstrators outside the prison compound. According to SSP Shyam Krishna Adhikari of Lalitpur, the prison administration had no choice but to release Lamichhane from the facility temporarily, as protesters gathered in large numbers from early morning and overwhelmed security efforts.
