Nepal Army and Police Appeal for Peaceful Dialogue Amid Ongoing Protests; Gen Z Calls for Calm and Preservation of National Assets
General Sigdel stressed that dialogue remains the best course of action for the nation during this turbulent period. “At a time when the nation needs stability and resolution, dialogue is the foremost option,” he said. Sigdel urged the protesters to show restraint and called for discussions between the government and the agitating groups to find common ground.
The political crisis in Nepal has resulted in a leadership vacuum after the resignation of both the Prime Minister and President. The resignation of political leaders has added fuel to the protests, as Gen Z-led demonstrations continue, demanding systemic change and better governance.
Gen Z Responds: Calls for Responsibility and National Preservation
In a response to the growing violence, Gen Z Nepal, which had led the protests, issued a statement on its official Facebook page. The group claimed that while their objective of forcing the resignation of the Prime Minister had been met, they now seek to avoid further violence. They denied involvement in any looting, arson, or causing injuries during the protests.
The statement emphasized the responsibility to preserve national resources and called for a cleaning program to be held tomorrow. The statement read:
"As the Gen Z movement in Bangladesh played a crucial role in restoring order after achieving their demands, we must now take similar responsibility in Nepal. Our country is in a state of unrest, and it is necessary for all citizens—especially Gen Z—to join hands in bringing the nation back to the right path. The objective we raised our voices for has largely been achieved, and now it is our collective duty to focus on peaceful national rebuilding and positive change."
Furthermore, Gen Z Nepal acknowledged the presence of a third force that may have hijacked the movement, turning it into a violent struggle. They reaffirmed their commitment to the peaceful preservation of national assets, urging all members to avoid engaging in criminal activities and to gather peacefully at Baneshwar tomorrow at 7:30 AM.
Army and Police Take Control
In response to the growing chaos, Nepali Army forces, alongside other security agencies, have been deployed across the country. General Sigdel confirmed that from 10:00 PM, the Army would be on the streets to protect government properties and ensure public safety. He urged all citizens to cooperate and refrain from participating in looting and destruction.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Nepal Police, in a press release, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and property during the protests. The statement condemned the violent actions that emerged from the peaceful demonstrations called by Gen Z. Nepal Police also appealed to the public, movement organizers, and civil society to come together for a peaceful resolution, stating:
"We express our condolences to the bereaved families and call for dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. The loss of lives and destruction of property is deeply regrettable. The Nepal Police is committed to ensuring safety, law, and order while striving to restore peace in the country. We request the support of all citizens in this effort."
Moving Forward
The appeal for dialogue and peaceful resolution is now being echoed across the political and security spectrum. As the country braces for further developments, the Nepali Army and Nepal Police continue to take steps to safeguard national interests, restore order, and guide the nation towards reconciliation. The fate of the ongoing protests now hinges on the willingness of both the government and the Gen Z movement to engage in dialogue and work towards a peaceful solution.
