Grief and Allegations Surround Young Doctor’s Death in Malda; Family Accuses Partner of Poisoning
PTI | September 15, 2025 | Kolkata : A tragic case of alleged betrayal, mental pressure, and suspected foul play has emerged from West Bengal, following the sudden and suspicious death of Anindita, a young doctor from Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur, currently working at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Her mother, Alpana Tudu, has alleged that Ujjwal, her daughter’s partner, poisoned Anindita after a series of arguments related to the registration of their marriage, which he had reportedly been delaying and avoiding.
“We saw her at the hospital CCU — she was frothing at the mouth. We strongly suspect that she was poisoned,” claimed Tudu, speaking to reporters. She also revealed that the couple had recently gone on a trip to Puri, where they got married secretly at a temple, but Ujjwal allegedly refused to register the marriage legally after returning.
“As he backed out of the promise later on, it resulted in frequent tiffs and altercations, and my daughter had been under a lot of pressure,” said the grief-stricken mother.
Anindita had met Ujjwal, also in the medical field, through social media and at various medical events, and their professional connection had soon blossomed into a romantic relationship. However, the relationship appears to have taken a dark turn in recent weeks.
According to Tudu, her daughter had visited their Balurghat residence last Sunday, and then left for Kolkata the next day. What has shocked the family is how Anindita, who was supposed to be in Kolkata, suddenly ended up in Malda, where she reportedly fell ill and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
“Yesterday, we got a phone call from Ujjwal saying our daughter had fallen seriously ill and was taken to Malda hospital. Today, we were informed that she had died,” Tudu said, breaking down. “We know she was asking him to marry her. We want the police to interrogate him properly.”
Following the family's allegations, Malda police picked up Ujjwal from his rented residence in English Bazar town, and he is currently being interrogated. A local court has since remanded him to six days’ police custody, and he is expected to be produced before the magistrate again on September 20.
In the wake of the incident, the West Bengal Junior Doctor Front expressed solidarity with the bereaved family. Aniket Mahato, a postgraduate trainee at R.G. Kar Medical College and a front leader, stated:
“We offer condolences to the family and demand a speedy and fair investigation into the case. Whoever is responsible for the death of our sister-friend in R.G. Kar should be found and punished. The allegations made by her mother must be investigated with utmost seriousness.”
The circumstances surrounding Anindita’s death remain unclear, and officials have not yet confirmed whether any toxicological tests or post-mortem findings have indicated poisoning. However, with the matter gaining attention both in the medical community and state law enforcement, pressure is mounting on authorities to ensure a thorough, impartial investigation.
As the case unfolds, questions remain — how did Anindita land in Malda, what transpired between the couple in the days leading up to her death, and was there a criminal motive involved? The police investigation will be critical in uncovering the truth behind a promising young doctor’s tragic end.
