CM Prem Singh Tamang Inaugurates State-of-the-Art Mangan District Hospital, A Landmark in North Sikkim’s Healthcare


KalimNews, September 24, 2025, Mangan : Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed Mangan District Hospital, dedicating it to the people of North Sikkim. 

The hospital, which is designed to serve as a modern, seismically resilient and secure healthcare facility, marks a milestone upgrade in the medical infrastructure of the district. Public representatives, dignitaries, senior government officials, members of the medical fraternity and local residents gathered in large numbers to witness the occasion, underscoring the significance of this development for the region.

The Mangan District Hospital is the only major health centre catering to North Sikkim. It provides essential medical services to nearly half of the district’s population, five public health sub-centres, a large migratory workforce, as well as both domestic and international tourists. Spread across a plinth area of 59,808 square feet and built on four floors, the facility has been carefully designed to accommodate diverse healthcare needs while maintaining international standards of safety, hygiene and accessibility.

The Ground Floor of the hospital, covering 17,447 sq. ft., houses the reception and registration lobby, pharmacy, general medicine, surgical, eye, dermatology, psychiatric, ENT, dental, paediatric and orthopaedic outpatient departments. It is also equipped with a physiotherapy unit, multipurpose room, medical store, CT scan, radiology unit with digital and conventional X-ray and ultrasonography, immunization and cold chain rooms, MCH room, separate male and female washrooms, doctors’ washrooms, and a connector to the Trauma Care Centre. Special provisions for accessibility, including a ramp and stair access, have also been incorporated.

The First Floor (16,589 sq. ft.) accommodates the paediatric department with examination rooms, a nurses’ station, step-down and SNCU beds, and a paediatric ward. The gynaecological department includes an operation theatre with allied facilities, antenatal care, labour room, post-natal care, and two six-bedded wards. In addition, the floor has a laboratory wing that houses pathology, microbiology and haematology labs with sample collection and technician rooms.

The Second Floor, also spread over 16,589 sq. ft., is dedicated to surgical and critical care. It comprises the main operation theatre, ICU with triage, male and female wards (five beds each), and orthopaedic wards for both male and female patients (five beds each). Other specialised sections include de-addiction, geriatric wards with four beds each, respiratory distress rooms, and a general medicine wing with 10-bedded male and female wards, along with nurses’ stations, HVAC, electrical and laundry facilities.

The Top Floor, with a plinth area of 8,203 sq. ft., is designed for administrative and support functions, housing a spacious conference hall, canteen, separate male and female washrooms, and common access areas.

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Tamang highlighted that the hospital is a “modern, seismically resilient facility that will restore essential healthcare services to North Sikkim's residents, workforce, and tourists while optimising patient flow and expanding critical departments.” Following the formal inauguration, he toured the hospital, inspecting the Dialysis Unit and Emergency Unit, interacting with medical staff, enquiring about the availability of critical equipment and expressing satisfaction with the upgraded infrastructure. He also inspected patient wards and stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness, efficiency and round-the-clock services to meet the needs of a growing population.

The event was attended by several key dignitaries including Minister for Health and Family Welfare Department G.T. Dhungel, Minister Sonam Lama, Minister Samdup Lepcha, Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, and Minister for Ecclesiastical and PHE Sonam Lama. MLA Kabi Lungchok-cum-Advisor, Health and Family Welfare Department, Thenlay Tshering Bhutia, was also present.

Among others present were Zilla Adhyaksha Kado Lepcha, Zilla Upadhyaksha Sonam Kipa Bhutia, Chairperson of the Sikkim Welfare Commission Nim Tshering Lepcha, Chairperson of the Medicinal Plant Board Gyatso Lachenpa, Chairperson of the Forest & Environment Department Pema Ongyal Lachungpa, advisors and chairpersons of several departments, Secretary Health and Family Welfare Department Tshewang Gyachho, senior officers of the Health Department, District Collector Mangan Anant Jain, SP Mangan Sonam Detchu Bhutia, APS to HCM (Mangan District) Phurba Bhutia, OSD Lachen Mangan Constituency Tshering Wangyal Bhutia, OSD Dzongu Constituency Roshan Limbu, as well as Panchayats, councillors, and other dignitaries. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tempo T. Kaleon, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Rinzing Dolma Bhutia, and heads of departments under Mangan District also graced the occasion along with senior officers of line departments.

The inauguration of Mangan District Hospital stands as a landmark step in strengthening healthcare in the Himalayan state, not only improving access for the people of North Sikkim but also enhancing the region’s preparedness to meet future medical challenges with resilience and modernity.
