Bengal Govt Takes Emergency Measures as IMD Warns of Heavy Rain from Oct 1

PTI, Kolkata, Sept 29, 2025 : The West Bengal government has initiated emergency preparedness plans following the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall starting October 1. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed officials to take all necessary precautions to mitigate any potential disruptions, according to a senior official.

"We have initiated comprehensive emergency measures, with all concerned departments on high alert. The Chief Minister is closely monitoring the situation," the official said on Sunday.

The recent torrential rain and electrocution incidents in Kolkata and its adjoining areas claimed the lives of twelve people, underscoring the urgency of the situation. As a precaution, the administration has set up a control room, where a senior IAS officer will be stationed to oversee operations. The control room will operate around the clock during the festive season, from September 26 to October 7, and again from October 20-24 and October 27-28.

The IMD has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to cause isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across most parts of West Bengal from October 2-4. The weather department also predicted squally winds, with speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph in some areas.

Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts due to the likely rough sea conditions.
