All districts of Bengal Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm as Low-Pressure Area Develops in Bay of Bengal
According to the forecast, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected to occur at a few places over South Bengal on September 21, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) likely over districts including Jhargram, East & West Midnapore, North & South 24 Parganas, and Nadia. On September 22, rain and thundershowers are anticipated at many places across South Bengal, and thunderstorms with gusty winds could impact all districts.
The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase on September 23, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely at most places in South Bengal. Heavy rainfall, ranging from 7 to 11 cm, is forecast for isolated locations in East & West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas. Thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue to affect the region. The weather will remain unsettled through September 24 and 25, with light to moderate rain likely across most of South Bengal.
The IMD has also noted the development of a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar-South Bangladesh coasts, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. This system is expected to intensify into a depression as it moves west-northwest towards the coasts of South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh by September 26, 2025. The depression is likely to cross these coasts around September 27, further enhancing rainfall and thunderstorm activity in the affected regions.
In addition to the rain, strong winds and thunderstorms with speeds of 30-40 kmph are expected to affect East India over the next five days, especially in areas like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and West Bengal. Fishermen in the Bay of Bengal have been warned of rough sea conditions, with winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph between September 25 and 27, making it dangerous to venture into the sea during this period.
The low-pressure system's development is also expected to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha, with isolated heavy rain likely over Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha from September 24 to 27. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will also experience heavy rainfall during this period.
While heavy rains are likely to continue in Northeast India through September 24, South Peninsular India, including Kerala, Rayalaseema, and Coastal Karnataka, is expected to experience sporadic rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall possible from September 21 to 27.
As the southwest monsoon begins its withdrawal from parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, the weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal will continue to influence conditions across India.
Over the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was recorded in various regions, including Gujarat, Marathawada, Bihar, and West Bengal. This rainfall is a result of multiple weather systems interacting, including a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and a western disturbance influencing the northern parts of the country.
The southwest monsoon is gradually withdrawing from parts of the northwest and central regions of India. The line of withdrawal now extends from 31°N/74°E, passing through Bhatinda, Fatehabad, Pilani, and Ajmer, and continues to move westward as conditions become favorable for the retreat of the monsoon from additional areas.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the north and central Bay of Bengal from September 25 to 27 due to the adverse sea conditions. Those currently out at sea should return to the coast by September 24.
South Bengal residents, as well as those in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Northeast India, should stay prepared for inclement weather over the coming days. Local authorities are advised to issue warnings, and the public should exercise caution due to the anticipated heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
