West Bengal Assembly Set for Heated Session Amid 'Bengali Harassment' Debate

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, August 29, 2025: The upcoming session of the West Bengal Assembly, scheduled for 1st, 2nd, and 4th September, is expected to be a heated affair, with significant political debates centered around issues of Bengali harassment and the ongoing SIR protest.

According to sources from the Assembly, a condemnation motion regarding the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking individuals, particularly migrant workers, in other states may be tabled for discussion. Additionally, there is a possibility of a censure motion and further deliberations on the uncontested bill, which has been a point of contention in the state’s political circles.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are expected to actively participate in the discussions, marking the session as a platform for a politically charged debate. The state government is keen on addressing the allegations of Bengali-speaking migrants being mistreated, especially after several incidents of atrocities on Bengali workers in other states have surfaced.

In recent months, incidents have been reported where Bengali migrant workers in different parts of India have faced discrimination and mistreatment. A common accusation is that these workers are being wrongly labeled as Bangladeshi nationals, resulting in their arrest and detention. Particularly controversial has been the statement by the Delhi Police, which stirred controversy by claiming that people speaking Bengali were not Bengali but Bangladeshi.

The government, alongside various groups, has raised concerns over the rising instances of xenophobic behavior toward Bengali-speaking people. Such cases have prompted both the state and national governments to respond, with the West Bengal government deciding to raise the issue in the Assembly.

The special three-day session beginning 1st September will begin with a condolence motion and proceed with discussions on key issues. On 2nd September, the Assembly will debate the contentious issue of Bengali harassment, with leaders from both Trinamool Congress and BJP likely to engage in heated exchanges.

In addition, sources suggest that the SIR (State Interference Rules) protest, which has been a major issue for the TMC in recent times, will also be addressed during the session. The TMC has been actively protesting against the SIR, with similar protests taking place in Delhi. As part of the session, there may also be a discussion on the unpassed bill, with the Assembly considering whether to send it back for further deliberation.

With tensions rising over these sensitive issues, the session is poised to be a battleground for political parties. The Trinamool Congress, which has been vocal in its opposition to the harassment of Bengali workers, is likely to use the session as an opportunity to rally support and push for stronger measures against such discrimination.

On the other hand, the BJP, which has faced criticism from various quarters regarding its stance on issues related to Bengali migrants, will also seek to defend its position and address the growing public concerns.

As the session draws closer, it is clear that the Bengali harassment issue will dominate the discussions, and the political landscape in West Bengal could be significantly shaped by the debates that unfold. The outcome of these discussions will likely have a lasting impact on the state’s political narrative, as both major parties seek to stake their claim on the issue of protecting the rights of Bengali-speaking migrants.

The special session, which is expected to stir emotions, is set to be a significant moment in West Bengal's political calendar, with the potential for both drama and major decisions.
