Two Arrested for duping a 72-year-old woman in ₹1.25 Crore 'Digital Arrest' Scam

PTI, Mumbai, Aug 30, 2025 : The Cyber Cell of Mumbai Police has arrested two persons from Jalgaon for allegedly assisting fraudsters in duping a 72-year-old woman of around ₹1.25 crore through a ‘digital arrest’ scam, an official said on Saturday.

Rohit Sonar and Hitesh Patil allegedly allowed the fraudsters to use their bank accounts to receive the money and transfer it abroad.

On August 18, the woman received a call from an unknown person claiming to be “Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Arora.” The caller falsely accused her of being involved in serious crimes such as money laundering and threatened her with arrest unless she paid up.

Terrified by the threat, the woman transferred approximately ₹1.25 crore into various bank accounts. However, after the transactions, she realised there was no official inquiry underway and filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell.

Investigations revealed that part of the defrauded amount was deposited into Rohit Sonar’s account. Hitesh Patil had allegedly shared account details with cyber fraudsters based abroad. The duo received commissions for helping route the funds to overseas accounts.

A further probe is underway, the official added.
