Sikkim Marks Independence Day; CM Awards Citizens for Caring for Elderly Parents

PTI, Gangtok, Aug. 15, 2025 : Sikkim celebrated the 79th Independence Day on Friday with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang hoisting the national flag at Palzor Stadium. The ceremony began with the CM arriving in an open jeep to inspect the guard of honour by Sikkim Police personnel.

As part of the celebrations, Tamang presented the Shrawan Kumar Award to recognise citizens caring for their elderly parents. Twenty-two awardees received ₹1 lakh each at the stadium, while the remaining 177 recipients were honoured in their respective districts.

Earlier in the morning, the CM also unfurled the national flag at his official Mintokgang residence.

Call for Unity and Self-Reliance

In his address, Tamang urged citizens to reaffirm their pledge to uphold the Constitution and work towards the welfare, unity, and development of the nation.

“Today, we join the entire country in celebrating the spirit of freedom, the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, and the strength of our great democracy,” he said.

He described Independence Day as not only a reminder of liberation from colonial rule but also “a call to uphold the values of unity, integrity, and resilience that define our nation”.

Development Vision for Sikkim

The CM reiterated his government’s commitment to building a self-reliant, equitable, and prosperous state, ensuring quality education for every child, opportunities for youth, dignity for farmers, and security for families.

He highlighted clean energy, organic farming, digital connectivity, skill development, and tourism as key drivers of Sikkim’s future growth.

Independence Day events were also held across other parts of the Himalayan state.
