NH 10 Traffic Suspension and Kalimpong Diversions Announced Ahead of Independence Day

Vehicle restrictions and route diversions enforced from August 12 to August 15 for safety and traffic management.

KalimNews, August 12, 2025 | Kalimpong : The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has issued a fresh directive mandating the closure of traffic movement for all categories of vehicles on a key stretch of National Highway 10 (NH 10) between Km 0.0 at Coronation Bridge and Km 30.0 at Chitrey. The restriction will remain in force from 8:00 PM on August 12, 2025, until 6:00 PM on August 15, 2025, citing safety concerns. 

While the movement of heavy vehicles on NH 10 has already been under restriction, the continued use of the highway by light vehicles has been causing severe traffic congestion in the area. Authorities have therefore decided on a more comprehensive suspension to ease the situation.

In a related development, Balasubramanian T., District Magistrate of Kalimpong, has issued a public notice detailing additional restrictions and diversions that will be in place within Kalimpong District on August 15, 2025, from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM in view of Independence Day celebrations and security measures.

As per the order, there will be No Entry Points for all vehicles heading into Kalimpong town at the following locations:

1. Toonibotay Fatak, 10th Mile Fatak – Parking at Sahid Park and Regulated Market, 11th Mile.

2. Seed Farm, Relli Road – Parking at Seed Farm Stand.

3. Novelty, 9th Mile – Parking at Novelty.

4. Saat–Dobato – Parking at Children’s Park.

5. Gym Hall, S.U.M.I. – Parking at Gym Hall, S.U.M.I.

6. Tirpai Fatak, 10th Mile – Parking at Gym Hall, S.U.M.I.

7. Bagdhara near Hotel Tres – Parking at Kumudini School Ground.

8. Mandir Dara, Bhalukhop Road – Parking at Mandir Dara, Bhalukhop Road.

Alternative Routes and Traffic Diversions for August 15, 2025:

• Vehicles from Chitrey/Teesta towards Kalimpong/Algarah: Take the route from Engine Dara, 9th Mile, Kalimpong via Upper Cart Road – Saat Dobato – B.L. Dixit Road – Printam Road – H.L. Dixit Road - Gokulay – Seed Farm – Sewa Sadan Road – Toonibotay, 10th Mile.

• Vehicles from 11th Mile Kalimpong/Algarah towards Chitrey/Teesta: Take Toonibotay, 10th Mile – Sewa Sadan Road – Seed Farm – Gokulay – H.L. Dixit Road – Printam Road – B.L. Dixit Road – Saat Dobato – Upper Cart Road – Atisha Road – Pine View Nursery – 8th Mile Petrol Pump, Kalimpong.

• Vehicles from Algarah towards Rangpo/Sikkim: Use Munsong Road, and vice versa.

The District Administration has urged residents, visitors, and transport operators to cooperate with the temporary arrangements to ensure both public safety and efficient traffic management during the holiday period.
