Kurseong: 23-Year-Old Tourist from Howrah ‘Falls from Balcony’, Dies

MP, Darjeeling, Aug 19, 2025 : A 23-year-old youth from Howrah, on holiday with his friends in Kurseong, allegedly fell from the balcony of a homestay and died early on Monday morning.

The deceased, identified as Saptanil Chatterjee, was a resident of Deulti in Howrah and a student of an engineering college.

Chatterjee, along with five friends, had checked into a homestay at Dowhill in Kurseong on Sunday after arriving from Jalpaiguri, where the group had stayed for two days. The six-member group included two males and four females, five of whom are Sociology students at Jadavpur University.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, local residents heard a loud thud. On stepping outside, they found Chatterjee lying in a pool of blood below the balcony. He was rushed to the Kurseong Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem and an unnatural death case has been registered as we have not received any complaint yet. An investigation is on. We have visited the place of occurrence and even called in a forensic team to inspect the site. The family of the deceased has been informed,” said Abhishek Roy, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kurseong.

The tragic incident occurred less than 24 hours after Chatterjee and his friends reached Kurseong. Police are probing the circumstances leading to his fall, while awaiting the post-mortem report.
