Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm and Gusty Winds Forecast for North Bengal and Sikkim
IMD issues advisory for August 17–23, warning of waterlogging, traffic congestion and reduced visibility in low-lying areas
KalimNews, August 16, 2025, Kalimpong : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast and cautionary advisory for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and adjoining regions for the period between August 17 and August 23. According to the forecast, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur at many or most places across the eight districts of North Bengal, namely Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur.
The forecast further indicates that thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, along with lightning, are expected to occur at one or two locations during this period. Similar weather conditions are also predicted for Gangtok, Namchi, Geyzing, Mangan, Pakyong and Soreng districts of Sikkim.
Authorities have cautioned that intense spells of rainfall may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly affecting underpasses and poorly drained roadways. A reduction in visibility during heavy downpours may also cause significant traffic congestion.
In view of these forecasts, residents and commuters have been advised to exercise caution and adhere to safety measures. Key suggestions include the judicious regulation of traffic movement, taking shelter in safe locations during heavy rain or thunderstorm activity, and avoiding travel through areas prone to waterlogging.
The advisory has been issued to ensure preparedness and minimize disruption in both states during the forthcoming spell of unstable weather conditions.
