BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari's Convoy Attacked in Cooch Behar, Allegations of Political Vendetta Surge
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, Aug 6, 2025 : Tensions reached new heights in West Bengal’s political landscape as the convoy of BJP Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, was attacked while he was en route to Cooch Behar on Tuesday morning. Adhikari, a prominent opposition figure, was leading a protest rally in the region when the attack occurred in the Ghagragarh area. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with the BJP accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the attack as part of a political vendetta.
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of men reportedly threw stones at the vehicles in Adhikari's convoy, resulting in the vandalization of several cars. The most severe damage was to Adhikari’s own vehicle, where the rear window was shattered by a brick. Despite the presence of police forces, the situation quickly escalated, with black flags being waved by protestors and “Go back” slogans being shouted in a show of defiance against the opposition leader.
Adhikari and other BJP legislators were heading to the office of the Cooch Behar district police superintendent to file a deputation regarding recent attacks on party members. The protestors, allegedly linked to TMC, reportedly blocked the convoy’s path and further heightened the tension by showing black flags in protest.
A viral video captured the moment when a protestor threw a stone at one of the vehicles, shattering its window panes. The confrontation was intense, but it was not immediately clear if anyone sustained injuries. The BJP, however, has strongly condemned the attack and claimed that it was a planned move aimed at silencing opposition voices.
Suvendu Adhikari, speaking after the incident, described the attack as a "murderous attempt" and confirmed that his vehicle was equipped with bulletproof glass, which likely saved him from any serious harm. "The bulletproof glass of my car was shattered," he said. "I was saved because I was in a bulletproof car. I knew this would happen," he added, implying that the attack had been premeditated.
BJP spokesperson Nisith Pramanik also weighed in, accusing the police of being complicit in the attack, stating, "The moment we entered Cooch Behar, there were a lot of anti-social elements. We had information that such a thing could happen, and so I had forewarned them. Our car was stopped at many places, and the police never helped us."
In response, TMC leaders have denied any involvement, claiming the incident stemmed from internal disputes within the BJP. "No TMC workers were involved in the attack. It is a result of the internal feud within the BJP," a TMC spokesperson stated.
The incident has already led to protests across the state, with BJP leaders accusing the TMC of fostering a culture of violence against political opponents. While no official statement has been released by the TMC regarding the attack, it has ignited further political clashes, adding to the already high tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.
As the investigation into the incident progresses, Adhikari has vowed to take legal action and move to court. “I will take this to court, and the law will take its course,” he said. The attack on his convoy has only intensified the political rivalry, with both parties gearing up for more confrontations in the lead-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The latest altercation has raised concerns over the state of law and order in Bengal, with opposition leaders accusing the police of failing to protect them from politically-motivated violence. The BJP has demanded immediate action against those responsible for the attack, claiming that the police should have intervened more effectively to ensure the safety of Adhikari and other party leaders.
As political tensions continue to rise, the episode serves as a stark reminder of the volatile and charged atmosphere in West Bengal’s politics, where rivalries often spill over into violent confrontations.
