Elderly Woman Brutally Assaulted and Robbed in Siliguri Amid Growing Crime Concerns

KalimNews & Agencies, Siliguri,  July 1, 2025  : A disturbing case of violent robbery has intensified growing public concerns over safety in Siliguri, where crime rates appear to be on the rise. In the early hours of Monday, a 73-year-old woman, Shyamoli Chakraborty, was subjected to a brutal assault inside her home in South Shantinagar, a residential neighborhood in the city. The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when three masked assailants reportedly gained unlawful entry into the premises through the back door while the elderly woman was asleep.

According to information from the police, the attackers—faces concealed with black cloth—launched a violent and unprovoked assault on Ms. Chakraborty while she lay in bed. She was punched forcefully in the face and ribs, causing serious injuries. In a calculated attempt to prevent her from raising an alarm, the intruders covered her face with a cloth before forcibly removing her gold earrings. Following the assault, the miscreants proceeded to ransack the house in search of valuables and then fled the scene.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Ms. Chakraborty managed to alert her son and daughter-in-law, who were in the same residence but reportedly unaware of the intrusion until the victim raised an alarm. The miscreants escaped before they could be apprehended. Officers from New Jalpaiguri Police Station responded promptly after being informed and initiated a full investigation into the matter. The gravity of the incident, targeting a vulnerable elderly citizen within the supposed safety of her own home, has sent shockwaves through the local community, further exacerbating concerns over law and order in the area.

In a related development, the Siliguri Police have made significant progress in a separate criminal case, arresting three individuals from Uttar Pradesh in connection with a daring daylight robbery that took place at a jewellery shop on Hill Cart Road on June 22. The arrested suspects—two men and a woman—have been taken into custody and are being brought to Siliguri under transit remand. They are expected to arrive by Tuesday for further legal proceedings.

The recent spate of violent crimes has prompted residents and local civic bodies to call for urgent and effective measures to ensure public safety and restore a sense of security in Siliguri’s neighborhoods. Authorities are being urged to not only expedite investigations but also to increase patrolling and surveillance in vulnerable areas to deter further incidents of this nature.
