Depression Over Gangetic Bengal to Bring Heavy Rain Across State, IMD Warns
PTI, Kolkata, July 14 , 2025 : A well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Gangetic West Bengal intensified into a depression on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of the state. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal by Tuesday afternoon.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at one or two locations across all districts of South Bengal, with extremely heavy downpours likely in South 24 Parganas, East Bardhaman, and West Bardhaman districts till Tuesday morning. From Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday, light to moderate rainfall is expected at one or two places across South Bengal, with heavier showers likely in Purulia, Bankura, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad districts.
In North Bengal, the weather office said that districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Malda, South Dinajpur, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar are also likely to receive heavy rain at one or two places till Wednesday morning.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast and the northern Bay of Bengal, as sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough. Wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph during this period.
