Chel Khola Changes Course After Torrential Rains, Floods Hit Kalimpong’s Gorubathan Block

Yowan Mothay, EOI, Kalimpong, July 14, 2025 : In the wake of incessant heavy rainfall over the past few days, the flow of Chel Khola—a turbulent mountain stream in the Gorubathan area of Kalimpong district, West Bengal—has dramatically changed its course, triggering severe flooding and impacting several nearby settlements.

The sudden deviation of the stream’s path has caused widespread disruption and anxiety among the local population. The increased water volume from Chel Khola has inundated several key areas considered the heart of Gorubathan Block, including the main market of Sombarey Bazar, the Dharmashala area, Mal Busty, and Mayalu Busty across the stream. Residents in these regions are grappling with waterlogged streets, damaged homes and infrastructure, and disruptions to their daily lives.

Understanding that sanctioning a large budget for long-term relief measures would take time, Kalimpong MLA Ruden Sada Lepcha has initiated the immediate execution of primary safety measures to prevent further damage and ensure the protection of both lives and property.
