Maid among two held for stealing Rs 45 lakh from businessman's house
PTI, June 24, 2025 Mumbai: Police have arrested a woman along with her male accomplice for allegedly stealing Rs 45 lakh cash from the residence of a businessman, where she worked as a maid in Mumbai's Borivali area, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Anuradha Randive (36) and Ashfaq Islam Khan (28), they said.
The duo was arrested hours after the case against them was registered based on the complaint by the victim and Rs 17 lakh cash was recovered from them, an official said.
The complainant, Varun Vasani, is a wholesale grocery trader. In order to hire a house help, he had approached a private agency which assigned Anuradha for the job. But after a few days, she left the house without informing anyone and her phone was also switched off.
Concerned, Vasani's wife filed a missing person's report at the Borivali police station. Two days later, when Vasani went to retrieve cash from the cupboard, he found the bag containing money to be missing.
On examining the CCTV footage of the housing society, they found that Anuradha was seen leaving the building carrying the same bag.
Based on the CCTV footage and technical inputs, the police managed to track down the accused duo. During her interrogation, Anuradha confessed to stealing the money. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining stolen amount, and further interrogation is ongoing, official added.
