Enhanced Rainfall Activity Over the Districts of West Bengal

The cyclonic circulation over South Bangladesh & adjoining North Bay of Bengal now lies over Northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.


The cyclonic circulation over West Central Bay of Bengal off north Coastal Andhra Pradesh coast at 5.8 km above mean sea level has merged with the above cyclonic circulation.
Yesterday’s trough now runs from East Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh across Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Gangetic West Bengal and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.
Latest meteorological analysis indicates that, conditions are favorable for further advancement of Southwest monsoon over some more parts of Odisha during next 24 hours; over some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during subsequent 3 days.
In view of above and strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, enhanced rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely in some districts of West Bengal.

Heavy Rainfall (7–11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal.

17-06-2025:
Heavy Rainfall (7–11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, South Dinajpur and Malda districts of North Bengal.

18-06-2025:
Heavy Rainfall (7–11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, North & South Dinajpur and Malda districts of North Bengal.

19-06-2025:
Heavy Rainfall (7–11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Alipurduar, North Dinajpur and Malda districts of North Bengal.

20-06-2025 and 21-06-2025: NIL.

Warning for Fishermen of West Bengal:
Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 35–45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is very likely over West Bengal–Odisha coast from 17/06/2025 to 18/06/2025.
Sea condition is very likely to be rough.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off West Bengal–Odisha coast from 17/06/2025 to 18/06/2025.

Possible Impact:

  1. Landslide in hilly areas in the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

  2. Rise in water level in rivers.

  3. Some damage to horticulture and standing crops & vegetables in the field.

  4. Temporarily water logging in low lying areas and reduction in visibility during intense spell of rain. Traffic disruption in urban areas.

  5. Possibility of lightning strike especially in open field.

Actions Suggested:

  1. Avoid movement in landslide prone and water logging areas.

  2. Do not use fertilizer & pesticides as it may wash out.

  3. Movement of traffic may be regulated judiciously.

  4. Necessary arrangement for sowing of paddy and drain out excess rainwater from nursery bed may be kept.

  5. Take shelter in safe place during thunderstorm with lightning activity and avoid taking shelter under tree/electric pole & avoid contact with water bodies.
