BJP leaders in Siliguri face social media controversy; MLA Sankar Ghosh seeks probe
SNS, SILIGURI, 15 JUNE 2025 : A few BJP leaders in Siliguri, including local MLA and Chief Whip of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Sankar Ghosh, have found themselves in a difficult situation following a series of social media posts by a woman, which they claim are aimed at damaging their public image. Mr. Ghosh addressed the media today regarding the issue and confirmed that he has lodged a complaint with the police, seeking a thorough investigation to uncover the motive behind what he described as a "deliberate attempt to malign" both his personal reputation and that of his party.
The controversy gained public attention after a media report highlighted the allegations. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ghosh alleged that the posts are part of a politically motivated conspiracy, possibly orchestrated by individuals with ambitions to contest the 2026 Assembly elections. "This seems to be an attempt to target BJP leaders for personal political gains," he said.
Mr. Ghosh acknowledged that he and a few party members had met the woman, identified as Swamali Majumdar, in 2022 when she visited Siliguri from another state. "That was the first and only time we met her. When we realised her intentions were not right, I blocked her on social media. Despite that, she continued posting misleading and defamatory content, making baseless claims involving me and other party colleagues," he stated.
The Siliguri MLA also informed that his legal team is preparing to initiate appropriate action in response to the allegations. He added that both the central and state leadership of the BJP have been briefed on the matter. Mr. Ghosh further claimed that the woman, at one point, had identified herself as a party supporter and a member of the BJP's IT cell in Bengaluru.
