Three Militants Arrested for Extortion in Manipur; Police Seize Demand Letters and Mobile Phones

PTI, IMPHAL, MAY 12, 2025 : Security forces have arrested three militants from two proscribed outfits for their alleged involvement in extortion activities in Manipur, police said on Monday.

One active cadre of the banned outfit Prepak was apprehended from Porompat DC Road in Imphal East district on Sunday, a senior officer said. The militant was involved in the extortion of money from various shops, government officials, and establishments, he said. "Nine demand letters were recovered from his possession," the officer added.

The police also arrested a member of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) from Khurai in Imphal East district on Sunday. He was directly involved in extortion from various fuel refilling stations in the Imphal area.

Another KCP (PWG) cadre was also arrested from Lilong in Thoubal district on Saturday.

Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President’s rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure until 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

On 10.05.2025, security forces arrested one active cadre of KCP (PWG), Buyamayum Arif Khan (30), from Lilong Ushoipokpi under Lilong PS, Thoubal District. He was involved in extortion activities from the general public, brick fields, sawmills, banks, hospitals, schools, colleges, oil pumps, shops, and stone crusher contractors in Thoubal District. One mobile phone along with two SIM cards were seized from his possession.

On 11.05.2025, security forces arrested one active cadre of KCP (PWG), Ngangom Rabi Singh @ Nganba (46), from Khurai Angom Leikai under Porompat PS, Imphal East District. The arrestee was directly involved in extortion activities from various oil pumps located in the Imphal area. One mobile phone was seized from his possession.

On 11.05.2025, Manipur Police arrested 01 (one) active cadre of the outfit PREPAK, namely, RK Johney Singh @ Nganba Khuman (25) of Top Khongnang Makhong Lane No. 10, Imphal East District from Porompat DC Road near Water Supply Complex under Porompat-PS, Imphal East District. The arrestee was involved in extortion of money from various shops, govt. officials and establishments.
