MP Raju Bista Seeks Urgent Action on Structural Damage to Kalimpong’s Loop Bridge; Raises Public Safety Concerns
KalimNews | May 19, 2025 | Kalimpong : Kalimpong, May 19, 2025 : Serious concerns have been raised by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista regarding the structural integrity of the newly constructed loop bridge on National Highway 717A, known locally as the “Sel Roti Bridge” or “Snake Bridge.” Despite having been completed just six months ago, the bridge, near Bagrakote has already shown visible cracks and indications of land subsidence. Alarmingly, these issues have arisen even before the bridge’s official inauguration.
In an official communication, Bista expressed deep alarm regarding the safety of the bridge, citing cracks on both the surface and foundation as possible indicators of substandard construction. He warned that these early signs of deterioration raise critical questions about construction quality and pose significant risks to commuters and residents alike.
In a recent statement, Bista called attention to the deteriorating condition of the bridge due to potential lapses in the quality of construction. He expressed his worry over the safety risks these issues pose to the community, emphasizing that it is a matter of concern for both local residents and daily commuters.
The MP also pointed out that land sinking around the bridge could worsen the situation, particularly as the monsoon season approaches in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong regions. He warned that if not addressed immediately, the structural instability could lead to more severe consequences, including the risk of catastrophic failure.
Another pressing concern, according to Bista and local residents, is the lack of adequate lighting along the loop section of the bridge. The MP highlighted that poor illumination at night makes the area especially hazardous for drivers, urging the authorities to install proper lighting to enhance road safety and prevent accidents.
In response to these issues, Bista has formally requested that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways take immediate action. His call includes a detailed review of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the bridge, as well as a thorough evaluation of the road design and construction quality. Additionally, he has demanded an independent investigation into the contractors responsible for the bridge’s construction, holding them accountable for any shortcomings or negligence.
“Given the current state of the bridge, it is crucial that immediate repairs or even reconstruction are considered to address the structural damage and land subsidence risks,” said Bista. He also emphasized the need for tighter quality control measures in all ongoing and future NHIDCL projects to prevent such issues from recurring.
In a statement on his efforts to resolve the situation, Bista mentioned that he had reached out to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging his intervention in light of the alarming reports regarding the bridge’s condition. "I have informed Gadkari ji about the emerging issues at the Loop Bridge, and I’m seeking his urgent action on this matter," he said.
Local news sources have reported that, while initial repair work has begun, residents are skeptical that these efforts will provide a lasting solution. Many argue that only a comprehensive investigation and a more robust commitment to quality construction can ensure the bridge’s long-term safety and durability.
As the situation unfolds, the MP’s office continues to press for quick and decisive action to protect both the public’s safety and the integrity of crucial transportation infrastructure in the region.
