Covid-19 resurgence: 40-year-old dies of coronavirus in Chandigarh

The UP native had tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday and succumbed to the illness in the early hours of Wednesday

The Week News, May 28, 2025 : A 40-year-old Covid-19 patient succumbed to death at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, Chandigarh, an official said, as per an ANI report.
This is one of the first Covid-related deaths in the country since the virus' resurgence over the past few weeks.
According to GMCH Medical Superintendent GP Thami—who had confirmed the patient's death— the patient had been referred from Ludhiana and was hospitalised two days ago with severe respiratory issues.
The UP native had tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday and succumbed to the illness in the early hours of Wednesday. When asked about the hospital's preparedness, the official stated that they had set up an isolation ward. “We have made an isolation ward. We suspect more people to come here suffering from Covid ...
The variant has not been identified yet ... Right now, it is preliminary," Thami said, in response to a question about the hospital's preparedness for more coronavirus cases. Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh, however, pointed out that the patient who died had “comorbidities”, in addition to being Covid-positive.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that despite the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in parts of the country, current variants in circulation were showing mild symptomatic similarities to the Omicron strain.
As per India's health ministry, the country's Covid-19 tally stands at a total of 1009 active cases, with 752 new cases recently confirmed, as of Monday.  According to government data, Kerala currently tops the chart with the highest number of active cases at 430. Other states with notable case counts include Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), and Karnataka (47).
