Bangladeshi National Arrested in Kalimpong for Illegal Entry, Sent to Police Custody

Illegal Entry Raises Security Concerns Amid Rising Infiltration Cases Across India

KalimNews, May 21, 2025, Kalimpong : Security concerns along India’s international borders have deepened following the arrest of a Bangladeshi national in Kalimpong, a sensitive region in the eastern Himalayan foothills. The individual, identified as Md. Abdul Sattar Milan, 38, son of Abdul Kuddus and a resident of Sarberia, Sulley, under Betkapa Police Station in Pirganj, Rangpur district of Bangladesh, was apprehended by Kalimpong Police on May 20, 2025, while loitering suspiciously in the Durpin area. Upon questioning, Milan failed to produce any valid documentation confirming his legal presence in India and admitted to being a Bangladeshi national who had crossed the border illegally.

Following his confession, the Kalimpong Police registered a case under Case No. 85/25 dated May 20, 2025, invoking Section 14(A) of the Foreigners Act. He was presented before the Learned Court in Kalimpong and remanded to three days of police custody for detailed interrogation and verification of his activities and possible links.

This arrest comes at a time of heightened national alert in the wake of recent security incidents, including the Pahalgam infiltration attempt in Jammu and Kashmir, where suspected militants tried to infiltrate Indian territory under the guise of civilians. These events are not isolated. Over the past few months, intelligence and law enforcement agencies across the country have detained several individuals, including foreign nationals from Bangladesh and Pakistan, for suspected espionage and unauthorized entry.

There have been multiple cases of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals being arrested from regions such as Rajasthan, Punjab, and Delhi, where investigations revealed involvement in activities ranging from illegal stay to gathering sensitive information. Intelligence agencies have expressed concern over sleeper cells and cross-border networks exploiting porous borders and using remote or less scrutinized regions such as Kalimpong for entry and movement.

The arrest in Kalimpong also highlights vulnerabilities in the eastern border regions, which, due to challenging terrain and relatively lower surveillance infrastructure compared to western frontiers, have often been used for clandestine movements. The proximity of Kalimpong to sensitive military zones and its strategic location near the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction makes any unauthorized presence particularly alarming for security forces.

Authorities are now intensifying scrutiny of foreign nationals residing or moving through the area without valid documentation. The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the arrested individual had any links to broader networks or intended involvement in activities that could threaten local or national security.

As India continues to confront growing challenges related to border infiltration and espionage, the government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening surveillance, improving coordination among intelligence agencies, and ensuring that any breach of national security is swiftly addressed in accordance with the law.
