Agencies, Gangtok, April 29, 2025 : In a turn of events that has delighted tourists, fresh snowfall began this morning around 8:30 a.m. at Tsangu Lake and along the Nathula Pass axis in Sikkim. The snowfall, while a stunning sight for visitors flocking to the state in April, did not affect traffic flow as roads remained open. Tourists have expressed excitement over the unseasonal snowfall, which has added to the appeal of the region’s scenic beauty during this time of year.

Despite the picturesque snowfall, uncertainty looms over the resumption of tourist permits on the Lachung side. These permits had been temporarily suspended due to the heavy rainfall and poor road conditions in the area. Tour operators are awaiting official confirmation about the reopening of tourist access to the region, amid a growing rush of visitors eager to explore the state's popular tourist destinations.

In light of the ongoing adverse weather conditions, which have caused frequent mudslides and severely impacted road conditions, the Superintendent of Police, Mangan District, Sonam Detchu Bhutia, issued a Vehicular Traffic Movement Regulation Order. This order outlines new regulations for vehicular movement in the region.

According to the order, all tourist vehicles traveling from Gangtok to Mangan or Chungthang via the Sankalang or Phidang Bailey Bridge must complete their movement by 2:00 p.m. After this time, no tourist vehicle will be allowed to cross. Similarly, all tourist vehicles returning to Gangtok must cross the Sankalang Bailey Bridge by 3:30 p.m.

The order also specifies that only light vehicles with a gross weight of less than 12 tons will be permitted to use the Sankalang Bailey Bridge. Heavy vehicles have been strictly prohibited until further notice. Authorities have urged public cooperation with these measures, warning that violations will attract strict legal action. The new regulations will come into effect from April 30, 2025, and will remain in place until further instructions are given.

In a separate development, road closures and diversions are also affecting other parts of the state. From April 29, the road between Kingstone to Aritar (Maneydanra) will be closed from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for maintenance, upgrading, and carpeting. The alternative route during this period is via Khamdong, Thongsong, and Hatichari. The changes in road timings and vehicle restrictions are aimed at ensuring public safety.

The authorities have emphasized that these measures are necessary to prevent mishaps and ensure the safety of the traveling public amid the ongoing adverse weather conditions. Public cooperation in adhering to these new guidelines is being sought to avoid any untoward incidents in the coming days.

As the snow continues to bring both beauty and challenges to the region, tourists and local authorities are urged to stay informed and comply with all safety regulations.
