Darjeeling talks draw mixed reactions
Ajoy Edwards (IGJA questions timing and inclusivity of talks, as non-BJP groups assess implications)
SNS, SILIGURI, 31 MARCH, 2025 : Darjeeling leaders prepare for tripartite talks on April 2, while some question the inclusivity and timing. In response to the Union Home Ministry's decision to hold a tripartite meeting on April 2, 2025, in Delhi, Darjeeling-based political leaders and organizations are preparing to attend the talks, hoping to resolve the long-standing issues affecting the hills and surrounding areas.
Tenzin S. Moktan, a Kalimpong-based youth, described the talks as a "critical opportunity," but cautioned against repeating past mistakes. Ajoy Edwards, Chief Coordinator of the Indian Gorkha Janshakti Front (IGJF), has questioned the timing and expressed doubts about the inclusivity of the discussions.
"The BJP's vague promises — autonomy, Sixth Schedule status, or statehood — remain unfulfilled," Edwards said. "This time, leaders must demand clarity, not ambiguity," he added. Moktan stressed that political divisions have weakened the movement and called for unity, along with a concrete roadmap and clear timelines.
Meanwhile, other groups and leaders, distancing themselves from the BJP, have begun discussing the implications of the meeting. Among them is Ajoy Edwards, who alleged that the meeting was convened "with an eye on the 2026 Assembly elections." He recalled similar talks held before the last parliamentary polls and expressed concerns about the timing and inclusivity of these discussions.
Emphasizing the need for vigilance, Edwards argued that all stakeholders advocating for the protection of the Gorkha community's identity should have been invited to the talks. He urged local leaders to demand broader representation in such meetings. "Indecision is no longer an option. If representatives fail to present a united stand, they must share the blame for stagnation," he added.
As the meeting approaches, the people of the hills await decisive action — rather than yet another round of empty assurances.
