5 daily habits to keep your heart healthy
Don't Miss
Apart from exercising and following a balanced diet, there are some significant steps to be taken in everyday life for heart health
Puja Awasthi, TW, April 04, 2025: When heart health is discussed, exercise and diet are often thought of first. While these factors are important, there are other significant but overlooked steps that can be taken in everyday life.
Dr Tanmay Kulkarni, Consultant, Cardiology, Jupiter Hospital, Baner, Pune shares five simple habits that can ensure optimal heart health for years to come.
1. Know your numbers
Heart problems often develop silently over time. Symptoms of high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar typically do not appear until it is too late. Therefore, a basic health check-up is advised once a year, especially after the age of 35. By keeping track of blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, early detection of potential issues can be made possible, and the heart can be protected.
2. Don’t ignore warning signs
Fatigue, breathlessness while climbing stairs, or indigestion during emotional stress are symptoms that could be indicative of heart trouble, especially in individuals with diabetes. Such signs should not be ignored. They could be early warnings of more serious conditions.
3. Be careful with painkillers
Over-the-counter drugs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac are often taken without caution. These medications can silently increase blood pressure and cause fluid retention, particularly in older adults. Their use should be avoided without proper medical consultation.
This might seem surprising but poor oral hygiene has been linked to heart issues. Infections in the mouth can lead to increased inflammation, potentially affecting the heart. Brushing twice a day and getting regular dental check-ups are simple steps by which the heart can be safeguarded.
5. Stay socially connected
Loneliness and emotional stress have been recognised as contributing factors to heart disease. Quality time should be spent with family and friends, and social engagement should be maintained. Activities that bring joy should be pursued. A happy heart is more likely to remain a healthy one.
