Woman forces husband to sell kidney at Rs 10 lakh, elopes with money and lover

PTI, KOLKATA, FEB 2 – A woman allegedly coaxed her husband into selling his kidney for ₹10 lakh to raise money for their daughter's education, only to flee with another man, taking away the entire cash in West Bengal’s Howrah district, a police officer said on Sunday.

Police have launched a probe based on a complaint lodged by the husband's family, who live in Sankrail.

According to the complaint, the woman had been pestering her husband for the past year to sell his kidney and earn money to improve their household conditions and admit their 12-year-old daughter to a good school.

Believing in his wife, the man agreed to undergo surgery after she arranged a contract with a buyer for ₹10 lakh. After the surgery, which took place last month, the man brought home the money. His wife then asked him to rest and avoid stepping outside for a speedy recovery.

"Then one day, she left the house and did not return. I later found that the entire amount of ₹10 lakh in cash, along with some additional money, was missing from the almirah," the man said.

With the help of friends and acquaintances, the family eventually tracked her to a house in Kolkata’s northern suburb of Barrackpore, far from Howrah. She was allegedly residing there with the man she had eloped with. According to the complaint, she had been in an affair with him for the past year after meeting him on Facebook.

However, when her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter visited the Barrackpore house, she refused to come out. Her lover allegedly told them that she would file for divorce, citing physical and mental torture by her in-laws over the 16 years of her marital life.

Speaking to reporters, the woman denied taking any cash from the in-laws’ home in Sankrail and claimed she had only taken away the money she had saved.

Based on the complaint and after reviewing video footage of the lover’s interaction with the husband’s family, the police have launched a probe. Officers stated that they would question the woman and her lover before initiating further action.
