TW, Kolkata, February 25, 2025 : In a horrific incident in north Kolkata's Ahiritola, two women were caught while allegedly trying to dump a human body into the Hooghly River near Kumartuli Ghat on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the women who had arrived at Ahiritola in a taxi were dragging a blue suitcase towards the river when the alerted locals confronted them and checked the trolley bag.
"The women claimed that the bag contained the corpse of their dog but we found a human body in it. We immediately informed the police," one of the locals was quoted by PTI.
Police arrested the women—identified as Falguni Ghosh and her mother Aarati Ghosh—and sent the body parts for postmortem.
"We are questioning them. We are also talking to the locals who spotted them while they attempted to throw the trolley bag into the river," a police officer said.
A local train ticket was found with the two women.
According to an NDTV report, the dead person has been identified as Sumita Ghosh, Falguni’s aunt-in-law.
The preliminary investigation has found that both Falguni and Aarati had been staying at a rented accommodation at Madhyamgram near Kolkata for over two years.
Their neighbours claimed to have seen strangers coming and going at night, but they didn’t have any detailed information since the family largely kept to themselves.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sumita and the motive behind the women’s attempt to dispose of the body in the river.
Meanwhile, police faced a brief protest from locals at Kumartuli Ghat as they demanded increased security in the area.
