Sikkim CM Golay Asserts Sikkim’s Distinct Identity, Rejects Merger with Darjeeling at SKM's 13th Foundation Day

Don't Miss

KalimNews, February 4, 2025 :  The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party celebrated its 13th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm at Bengthang Tar, Pacheykhani, under the Rhenock Constituency. The event, marking a significant milestone since the party’s founding in 2013, was graced by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shriman Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) and his spouse, Mrs. HCM Krishna Rai. Prominent leaders, including former Minister Shri Bishnu Khatiwada, were present as guests of honour, alongside numerous SKM Party members and supporters.

A key moment in the celebrations came when Chief Minister Golay addressed the ongoing discussions regarding the potential merger of Sikkim and Darjeeling. He firmly rejected the idea, describing it as a “non-issue” and reaffirming that Sikkim’s distinct status is protected under Article 371F of the Indian Constitution.

The Chief Minister emphasized that no such merger could ever occur. He assured the people that Sikkim’s rights and autonomy were safeguarded, saying that those spreading misleading narratives were attempting to sow confusion. “There are certain groups trying to stir up doubts about this matter, but I want to make it clear that this is a non-issue. The Constitution of India ensures that Sikkim’s status remains protected. A merger with Darjeeling is not something that will ever happen,” Golay stated. He further urged the public not to be misled by false claims, asserting that the special rights granted to Sikkim were non-negotiable.

Additionally, the Chief Minister called for open debates on the subject but cautioned against misleading the people of Sikkim. He stressed that the rights and status of Sikkim were not up for discussion, declaring that no efforts to undermine those rights would succeed.

Golay’s remarks came amid rising concerns from certain groups attempting to create confusion around the merger issue. He urged the people to stand firm in their support for Sikkim’s distinct identity and to reject attempts to divide or confuse them.

Alongside addressing the merger issue, the Chief Minister also highlighted the government's efforts to secure tribal status for 12 communities in Sikkim that had previously been excluded from recognition. He assured the public that this was a top priority for his government and emphasized that a high-level committee had been established to push forward the recognition of these communities.

The 13th Foundation Day celebration not only underscored SKM’s vision for the future of Sikkim but also reinforced Chief Minister Golay’s firm commitment to preserving the state’s autonomy and protecting its people’s rights. His strong stance on the merger issue reaffirmed the party's resolve to keep Sikkim’s identity intact and prioritize the welfare of all communities within the state.
