Controversy Erupts Over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's 'Mrityukumbh' Remark on Mahakumbh

Don't Miss

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 20, 2025, Kolkata :  Tensions have risen following West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's controversial statement in the state assembly, where she referred to the ongoing Mahakumbh as 'Mrityukumbh' (Death Festival). This remark has sparked widespread protests, with accusations of disrespecting religious traditions and triggering heated debates about the state's handling of the massive religious event.

According to official estimates, approximately 53 crore people were expected to bathe in the sacred Triveni Sangam as part of the Mahakumbh. As of now, about 50 crore pilgrims have already participated in the ritual, which has unfortunately been marred by numerous casualties. Despite the tragic loss of life, the Chief Minister's remarks have intensified the controversy surrounding the event.

In the assembly, Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger at the ongoing disaster, denouncing the Mahakumbh in strong terms. Her use of the term 'Mrityukumbh' triggered an uproar, with opposition parties and religious groups immediately voicing their outrage. The situation escalated further on Tuesday when members of the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) gathered outside the assembly gate to protest against the Chief Minister’s statement. This led to a standoff with the police, who had to intervene to control the protestors. Approximately fifteen ABVP supporters were detained and taken to Lalbazar police station.

The protests have extended beyond student groups, with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also joining the criticism. He condemned Banerjee's words, stating, "Insulting Sanatan Dharma has become Mamata Banerjee's nature. Indian culture, which has flowed like the waters of the Ganges for thousands of years, should be respected by all. Those who attack our culture only harm themselves." Many believe that the Chief Minister's remarks were an attempt to appease Muslim communities, with some accusing her of repeatedly targeting Hindu religious practices.

As the protests continue to unfold, the debate over the handling of Mahakumbh and the Chief Minister's controversial statement shows no signs of abating. The political and social ramifications of this dispute are expected to play out in the coming days, with various factions preparing to rally support for their respective positions.
