Kishan Singh, a 32-year-old from Jaipur, was deployed at the airport as part of his CISF duties. According to the police, Singh shot himself in the stomach with his service rifle. "He was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead," said Police Inspector NV Bharwad.
The motive behind this tragic step is being investigated, police said. The washroom, where Singh took the fatal action, was quickly cordoned off as part of the ongoing probe. The incident caused significant panic among airport staff.
Singh joined CISF as an assistant sub-inspector in 2015 and was promoted to the rank of police sub-inspector in 2022. He had been posted at Surat Airport for the last year and, before that, was posted at Mumbai Airport.
"As soon as the shot was heard from the male washroom near the departure gate of the airport, other CISF jawans rushed to the spot. Kishan Singh was immediately taken to the nearest hospital, where he died during treatment. No note was found at the scene. We are currently investigating the case," said Surat airport in-charge Assistant Commissioner of Police NP Gohil.
The CISF, a paramilitary force responsible for securing airports across India, has not released an official statement on the matter yet. This is not the first time a jawan has committed suicide. A year ago, a CISF jawan reportedly shot himself with his service rifle at the Kolkata airport. The CISF jawan from Telangana was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Another similar incident occurred in 2022 when the body of sub-inspector Pankaj Kumar was found soaked in blood in a basement toilet meant for airport staff. Police said that a gunshot alerted everyone at the airport. As the airport security personnel rushed into the toilet, they were stunned by the sight. The CISF jawan lay soaked in blood, with a bullet wound on his forehead, and his service pistol was found near his body.
Wednesday’s incident occurred just two weeks after a man from Manipur reportedly jumped from the airport flyover upon his arrival in Kolkata. The incident took place on Republic Day.
A 50-year-old man, identified as Oinam Ranjan Singh from Imphal, Manipur, died on January 26 after allegedly jumping from a flyover leading to the departure area of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
According to airport sources, Ranjan Singh had arrived in Kolkata from Imphal on January 23 and had been spotted at the airport premises over the past few days. He was reportedly scheduled to return home on Sunday.
The incident occurred at 3:23 p.m. when Ranjan Singh fell from the flyover onto the city-side arrival area of the airport. A spokesperson for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed the timing of the tragic event.
Ranjan Singh, critically injured in the fall, was immediately attended to by a doctor on duty at the airport and rushed to a state-run hospital in Barasat by personnel from the NSCBI Police Station. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“The injured man was promptly transported in an ambulance, but unfortunately, he could not be saved,” said Dhanamjaya Rao, Acting Director of Kolkata Airport.
