Centre Provides Z-Category Security To Dalai Lama After Threat Assessment

Don't Miss

DD News, February 13, 2025 : The central government has granted Z-category security to the Dalai Lama following a recent threat analysis report by the Intelligence Bureau, ANI reported.

Previously managed by the Himachal Pradesh Police alongside other agencies, the Tibetan spiritual leader’s security will now be overseen by the CRPF, ensuring a more coordinated and enhanced protection system in response to updated intelligence and potential risks.

The Dalai Lama, a globally revered figure and the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism, has been living in India since 1959 after fleeing Tibet in the wake of the Chinese occupation. His presence in India has remained a point of contention in Sino-Indian relations, with Beijing frequently criticizing his global engagements and influence.

With the Dalai Lama’s prominence and the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding Tibet, the enhancement of his security underscores the Indian government’s commitment to safeguarding the spiritual leader. The Z-category cover will provide him with a dedicated team of CRPF commandos, close-protection officers, and an escort during his travels within the country.

This decision comes amid heightened concerns over his safety, particularly given China’s longstanding opposition to his activities. The move not only highlights the Indian government’s proactive stance in protecting high-profile figures but also signals its unwavering support for the Tibetan leader, who has made Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, his home for over six decades.
