Autopsy reveals 'not suicide but murder' of 3 women in Kolkata's Tangra;

The husbands of two women found dead in Tangra were involved in a road accident at EM Bypass
The Week, February 21, 2025 : Two women and a teenage girl, who were found dead at a four-storey apartment in Kolkata's Tangra, were murdered, revealed Kolkata police. The deaths were initially thought to be suicide.

The bodies of two women, identified as 44-year-old Romi Dey and 39-year-old Sudeshna Dey, 39, and a minor girl, Priyamvada, were found by the police on Wednesday. The deceased were wives of brothers Prasun Dey and Pranay Dey. The third victim is the daughter of Romi and Prasun Dey.

Shockingly, their bodies were found after police arrived at their home in connection with a road accident that occurred at EM Bypass early on Wednesday. The men involved in the accident were Pranay, Prasun, and Pranay's son Pratip.

According to Kolkata Police, Romi had slashes on the wrist and a cut on her throat, which caused her death. Sudeshna too had small injuries, but her death was caused by haemorrhagic shock or excess bleeding.  The minor girl died due to poisoning. The deaths, apparently, occurred between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday early morning.

Police got a hint of the incident after Pranay, who was injured in the accident, gave inconsistent statements to the police. This raised suspicion after which police questioned the younger brother, who claimed the statement was inconsistent because his brother was drowsy. The police decided to visit their homes, which revealed the bodies.

The initial suspicion was that the deaths were a suicide pact. The brothers also told the police that all six family members ate "payesh" laced with a high dose of sedatives, hoping to die. The brothers claimed they woke up hours later to find the women "asleep" and they 'slashed their wrists and throats" to ensure death.   The brothers added that they also tried to kill Pratip but then decided to drop him in a hospital. But he wanted to accompany his father and uncle to wherever they went, the brothers told the police.  It was then that they decided to drive around and cause an accident on the EM Bypass.

However, the minor girl had multiple bruises, which hints that a tussle happened before she was overpowered and poisoned. This challenges the claim of a suicide pact, Telegraph quoted a senior police official.

"A scalp haematoma (a localised collection of blood) was found in the occipitotemporal region,” an officer said. "Her palms and feet had turned bluish because of a lack of oxygen in the body. A small amount of partly digested food, yellowish and with whitish granules, that had a medicinal smell was found in her stomach," he added.
