Anit Thapa Assures Darjeeling’s Tea Garden Workers of Land Protection After Concerns Over Freehold Allocation

KalimNews, Darjeeling, February 7, 2025 : In the wake of concerns raised by the announcement of potential land allocation for tea tourism, Anit Thapa, Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), has sought clarity from state officials on the matter, particularly the proposed allocation of up to 30% of tea garden land for tourism and related businesses. This proposal, which was introduced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the Bengal Global Business Summit, has sparked widespread protests in Darjeeling and surrounding areas.

During a conversation with the District Magistrate of Darjeeling and the Chief Secretary of the state, Thapa highlighted the importance of Darjeeling's tea gardens, which are integral to the region’s identity and economic landscape. Thapa emphasized, “Darjeeling's tea gardens are the identity of the hills. We won’t allow even a single tea plant to be uprooted.” His strong stance reflects the concerns of local communities and tea garden workers, who fear the potential impact of the proposed land allocation on both the environment and their livelihoods.

Thapa elaborated that while the Chief Minister’s announcement had caused widespread confusion, the District Magistrate had confirmed that no formal orders had been issued, and that even local officials were uncertain about the specifics of the situation. Thapa further reached out to the Chief Secretary, who reportedly assured him that no notification would be issued regarding the freehold allocation of land.

The GTA Chief stressed that his primary role is not only to serve from his office but also to be the voice of the people of Darjeeling. In light of the Chief Secretary’s assurances, Thapa urged the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary agitation. He reaffirmed that the government had committed to ensuring that no tea garden land would be allocated for freehold purposes.

Thapa’s efforts to address the issue underscore the importance of preserving Darjeeling's natural beauty and its tea gardens, which draw tourists from around the world. "Tourists don't visit Darjeeling to stay in five-star hotels; they come to experience the region's natural beauty, clean environment, and lush greenery," Thapa said.

In his concluding remarks, Thapa made it clear that any efforts by investors to encroach upon the region's tea gardens would face opposition, promising to stand by the people of Darjeeling and protect their heritage. "If any investor tries to encroach upon our greenery, Anit Thapa will stand by your side. We won't allow even a single tea plant to be uprooted," he declared, offering reassurance to the local communities concerned about their future.
