Two Cases of Human Metapneumovirus Detected in Karnataka Amid Ongoing Surveillance: ICMR confirms

Agencies, New Delhi, January 6, 2025: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the detection of two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, following routine surveillance of respiratory viral pathogens. These cases were identified as part of ICMR’s ongoing nationwide effort to monitor and track respiratory illnesses, a vital component of the country's public health surveillance system.

According to the Health Ministry, both cases were identified at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. A three-month-old female infant, diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted with bronchopneumonia, has since been discharged. Additionally, an eight-month-old male infant tested positive for the virus on January 3, 2025, and is currently recovering. Neither patient has a history of international travel, underscoring that these cases are not linked to foreign outbreaks.

The ministry further emphasized that the HMPV virus is already circulating globally, including in India, with cases of respiratory illnesses related to the virus having been reported in various countries. However, current data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network suggests there has been no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao clarified that while an eight-month-old child was indeed affected by the HMPV virus, it is incorrect to refer to this as the first case in India. Gundurao explained that HMPV is not a new virus, and a certain percentage of people are naturally affected by it each year. He also refuted claims that the virus in India was linked to the recent surge in cases in China. “HMPV is an existing virus, and it causes symptoms like cold, cough, and flu. It is generally self-limiting and resolves on its own,” he stated.

The Health Ministry has assured that the country is well-prepared to handle any increase in respiratory illnesses, citing the results of recent preparedness drills and the effectiveness of the existing surveillance systems. The ministry also pointed out that the World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation in China and providing regular updates to inform ongoing measures in India.

A Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) meeting, held by the Ministry of Health last week, reviewed reports of rising respiratory illness cases in China. The meeting concluded that the situation in China is consistent with the flu season and does not indicate an unusual threat. The ministry has reiterated that a robust surveillance system is in place for both ILI and SARI cases, ensuring that any potential health risks are closely monitored.

The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation, and the ICMR is committed to tracking trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year. At present, there is no cause for alarm, and the government remains vigilant in its efforts to protect public health.
