Suspicion grows over mystery bank accounts following RG Kar incident; Rs 3 crore raised

MP, 13 Jan 2025, Kolkata: Mystery shrouds over the opening of several bank accounts following the RG Kar incident, generating millions of rupees of funds in those accounts in the name of donations and transfer of funds mutually from one account to another has raised serious questions whether anti-RG Kar movement of the junior doctors was kept alive only to raise funds from public or the funds were paid to individual doctors to keep the protests going.
Over Rs 3 crore were generated in 3 bank accounts. ‘News the Trurth’, an online English portal on its YouTube channel has made a startling revelation with documents, giving birth to multiple questions on the junior doctors’ protest.
The channel showed that after the RG Kar incident happened on August 9 in which a woman post graduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered, a doctor from RG Kar, Priya Lakra opened a current bank account along with two others on August 21.
Lakra’s account generated over Rs 44 lakh between August 21 and October 10 in 2024, as claimed by the ‘News the Truth’. What is interesting is that Lakra was never the face of the movement. The channel also claimed that QR codes were shared and widely circulated for crowd funding under the banner ‘Justice for Abhaya, Justice for RG Kar’.
Three bank accounts were created one after another. The second one was also a current account opened on August 29 in the name of Dr Subhadip Sardar who was not even attached to RG Kar but to Calcutta Medical College. Sardar’s account generated a funding of Rs 62 lakh between August 30 and December 17 in 2024.
The third account was created on September 26, in the name of West Bengal Junior Doctors Front under which the entire junior doctors’ movement was orchestrated. On the day (September 3) the junior doctors carried out Lal Bazar march demanding the resignation of the then Kolkata police commissioner, Sardar’s account registered a crowdfunding of a total Rs 16 lakh in a single day.
Lakra’s account also remained active on the same day and generated funds of Rs 3.77 lakh on the same day. When junior doctors’ demonstration was going on outside Swasthya Bhawan between September 10 and 20, about Rs 32 lakh was generated in Sardar’s bank account and around Rs 28 lakh in Lakra’s current account.
The ‘News the Truth’ s report triggered suspicion over the huge crowd funding and also on the way the amount in various denominations were spent from these accounts. There was also a lack of transparency in the transactions. Funds were transferred from Lakra’s account to many, including to a junior doctor from Murshidabad (Rs 1 lakh).
What is interesting, Rs 68,000 was transferred to Sardar’s current account from Lakra’ personal account. Later, funds were also transferred to Lakra’s current account from that of Sardar’s.
An MD doctor from Midnapore Medical College was also given money on his account, as claimed by the YouTube channel.
