Sanjay Raut, a senior Shiv Sena leader, made the announcement, emphasizing that the decision was taken with the full consent of party chief Uddhav Thackeray.

"We will fight alone, whatever happens. We need to focus on our own strength," Raut stated, while confirming discussions with the party’s Nagpur branch chief, Pramod Manmore, about contesting independently in the crucial Mumbai and Pune bypolls.
