Rajganj cop held in rape case, sent to 14-day judicial custody

RAJDEEP MONDAL, MP, 14 Jan 2025, Jalpaiguri: The cops of Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station on Tuesday arrested Sub Inspector (SI) Subrata Goon of Rajganj Police Station in a rape case.
The accused SI was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Jalpaiguri, which remanded him to jail custody for 14 days. The incident came to light when a woman lodged a complaint alleging that the SI had repeatedly summoned her to Rajganj Police Station in connection with an ongoing case.
On Friday, she claimed, Goon called her to his rented house, located opposite the police station in Rajganj, where he raped and physically assaulted her.
After the assault, the woman approached Siliguri Women’s Police Station to file a general diary (GD), but she allegedly faced harassment while attempting to report the crime.
Following her complaint, the case was transferred to the Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station, where a formal case was registered under Sections 64(2)(a)(i) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
SI Goon was initially removed from active duty and reassigned to the police lines following the accusation.
Public Prosecutor Soumya Chakraborty said: “After four days of the incident, SI Subrata Goon was arrested and produced before the CJM Court. The court has remanded him to jail custody for 14 days.”
