Panic in Kolkata as Tilting Building Prompts Emergency Measures
Don't Miss
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, January 15, 2025, Kolkata: Residents of Vidyasagar Colony in Kolkata were thrown into panic on Wednesday when a building tilted dangerously to one side during repair work involving the use of a jack. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage were reported.
The incident, which initially caused widespread alarm, saw an immediate response from Kolkata Municipality officials, Kolkata Police, Disaster Management Group (DMG), fire brigade teams, and other administrative departments. Emergency vehicles and ambulances were swiftly deployed to ensure preparedness for any potential mishap.
Following the incident, the Kolkata administration called in technical experts to assess the situation. Officials quickly disconnected the building's power supply to prevent electrical hazards. A comprehensive inspection was carried out to identify risks, including the presence of LPG cylinders, their locations, and the floors they were on. After thorough deliberations, it was decided to demolish the leaning structure to mitigate any further risks.
The demolition process will be carried out under the supervision of experts to ensure the safety of nearby buildings and residents. Officials emphasized that every precaution would be taken to minimize disruption and prevent damage to surrounding structures.
“The safety of residents and surrounding buildings is our top priority. This demolition will be done methodically and with expert oversight,” a spokesperson for the Kolkata administration stated.
The incident has sparked concerns about structural safety in the area, with calls for stricter monitoring of repair and construction practices to avoid similar situations in the future.
