Miscreants attack cops, take away undertrial prisoner in North Dinajpur

Radhamadhab Saha, MP, 15 Jan 2025, Raiganj: Miscreants intercepted a prison van and took away an undertrial murder accused with them after firing on police near Ekarchala of Panjipara under Goalpokhar Police Station limits in North Dinajpur district on Wednesday evening. 

Assistant Sub-Inspector (SI) Nilkanta Sarkar and constable Deben Baisya sustained serious bullet injuries and were immediately admitted to Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital. 

Later, they were shifted to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital. Police sources said that one Sajjad Alam, accused in a murder case, was being transported back to Raiganj Jail after being produced at the Islampur Sub-Divisional Court earlier during the day. 

While travelling on National Highway 31 near Ekarchala, Alam requested the police to allow him to relieve himself. The prison van stopped by the roadside, and as the officers escorted him, a gang of miscreants 

ambushed them. The miscreants reportedly snatched a revolver from the police, opened fire, and fled the scene on motorcycles with Alam. 

The incident has raised serious concerns about the security measures in place for transporting undertrial prisoners. The brazen nature of the crime and the injuries sustained by the officials have left the community on edge. 

Police have intensified efforts to trace the accused and the gang involved. Meanwhile, security protocols for prisoner transport are likely to come under scrutiny following this incident. Ghulam Rabbani, State Minister for Non-Conventional and Renewable Energy Sources condemned the attack and assured swift action. 

He said: “We have directed the Superintendent of Police to take all necessary steps to arrest all the criminals involved at the earliest.” Jobby Thomas, Superintendent of Police, Islampur, said: “An investigation is underway. Efforts are on to apprehend the culprits and ensure justice is served.”
